A 41-year-old Ocean View man died when he was thrown from a pickup truck bed Saturday morning in Ocean View.

He was identified as Michael J. Anderson.

Officers responding to an 8:08 a.m. call Saturday determined Anderson was standing in the bed of a westbound Toyota pickup on Walaka Drive when the truck’s driver failed to obey the stop sign at the intersection of Paradise Parkway. The driver then made a sharp left turn into a gravel lot and Anderson was ejected from the truck bed, police said. He was found unresponsive on the roadway in the eastbound lane of Walaka Drive.

Anderson was taken to Kona Community Hospital in critical condition and later flown to The Queens Medical Center on Oahu, where he was pronounced dead Sunday at 9:38 a.m.

The driver of the truck, 45-year-old Adrian Leopoldo Yurong of Ocean View, initially was arrested on suspicion of first-degree negligent injury and driving without insurance. He was released pending further investigation.

The case now is classified a negligent homicide and an autopsy was ordered.

Because Anderson’s death occurred in a private subdivision, police do not count it as an official traffic fatality.
